Which Holidays Suspend Alternate Side Parking in NYC?
NYC suspends alternate side parking on roughly 40 days a year. The list is published each year by NYC DOT and includes legal holidays and many religious and cultural observances. In 2026 there are 42 suspension days — see the full 2026 calendar.
Major legal holidays: meters are off too
On six major legal holidays — New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas — both street cleaning rules and parking meters are suspended. Stopping, standing and parking are allowed except where those rules are in effect seven days a week, such as “No Standing Anytime”.
Other holidays: ASP off, meters on
On the rest — including Lunar New Year, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, Passover, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, Diwali, Three Kings' Day, Election Day and Veterans Day — only street cleaning is suspended. You still need to feed the meter.
Snow and emergencies
The city can also suspend ASP for snow, weather or other emergencies, usually announced the day before. Our ASP today page checks NYC 311 automatically.
